When widow, June Moore retired to the beautiful Cornish town of Falmouth in 2008 she found a warm welcome and the confidence to begin writing. This book gathers together June’s reflections of her current life and the lovely natural surroundings in Cornwall, together with personal pieces of writing.
June’s obvious love of the Falmouth coastline shines through in descriptive poems like the opening one Dawn, and in Contemplation, where she both delights in and is in awe of the relentless force of nature. Love of family and the value of friendship is evident in several poems; my favourite being Aunty Molly, a creative and selfless lady who “slaved with a needle”, in her younger days helping to pay the bills and in later life made “jams, currant jelly” and “pickles” for charity. There are also philosophical poems here which some readers will find comforting. In these we are urged to look to the future and not the past with its “imagined failings” (Hindsight) and to use day dreaming and relaxation as a way of getting through the tough times. (Slow Down)
However I feel June is at her best in her love poems. The gentle Aspects of Love is a real gem. It takes us though the stages of love which all readers will recognise. Springtime love is “exhilarating” and full of “promises never to be broken”, summertime love has “responsibilities” and “anxiety” to temper the passion. Finally autumn loving is “a calm complete love/which [does]not flaunt itself”. Yes it’s about love, I think it’s also about the stages of life and the confidence we gain from experience.
June’s reflections are accompanied by some beautiful photographs; personal ones, others depicting scenes of Falmouth.
